「賛成」「反対」を意味する英語を入試に出るものだけをまとめてみた

ジェスチャーなら親指を上げる(thumbs-up)のが「賛成」、親指を下げる(thumbs-down)が「反対」ですね。

3. 賛成・反対を意味する英語表現に関するクイズ －解説

3-1 Q1の解説

 Q1: Are you for or against the plan? の意味は？
あなたはその計画に賛成ですか、それとも反対ですか

これは学校で習いましたか？

初めて習うと多かれ少なかれ驚く人が多い表現です。

be for は「賛成する」という意味になります。

forの基本的な意味は「～に向かう」ですが、この場合は計画に気持ちが向いているのですね。

be againstは「反対する」という意味です。

against自体が「対立」を意味する前置詞なのでこれが分かりやすいと思います。

3-1 Q2の解説

Q2: 適切な前置詞を入れて下さい

1. I agree ( with ) you.

2. I agree ( to ) the plan.

agreeの前置詞は色々とあって厄介ですが、agree with 人が1番よく使われます。

このwithは人(の意見)と「一緒」だよという感じが出ていますね。

一方で計画などが来る場合は、同意の方向を表すだけなのでtoを使います。

これ以外にもagree on と言い方もありますが、これはonがabout 的な意味で「～に関して同意する」という意味です。これが文法問題の答になることもありますが、レアケースです。

2012年のセンター試験本試験問6にも以下のような文がありましたので参考に。

Although researchers do not agree on all the reasons behind procrastination, there is general agreement about some factors that can explain it.

3-3 Q3の解説

Q3: 選択

1. I [ oppose / oppose to ] the proposal.

2. I [ object / object to ] the proposal.

3. I [ opposed to / am opposed to ] the proposal.

4. I object to [ start / starting ] a new project.

「反対する」という動詞はagreeの反対のdisagreeという動詞もよく使われますが、これはagreeと使い方は同じです。

厄介なのはobject / oppose / opposed の区別です。opposeの方が強めな反対ながらも大意は変わりません。

まずと1.と2.を見て下さい。解答から違いは分かりましたか？そう、

objectは自動詞、opposeは他動詞でobject to = opposeという関係があります。

3. のopposedですが、辞書では形容詞扱いされています。元々は単なる過去分詞だったはずですが。

oppose ～ ≒ be opposed to ～になります。

(厳密に言うと「反対する」か「反対している」の違いがあります)

そして試験に1番出題されるのはobject to Vingという形です。

えっ、object to V じゃないの？と思われる方もいるでしょう。では2.をもう一度よく見て下さい。後ろに名詞が取れるということはこのtoの品詞は？

そう、前置詞です。いわゆる前置詞のtoで

look forward to Ving「Vすることを楽しみに待つ」
be used to Ving 「Vすることに慣れている」

などが有名ですが、object to もこの仲間なんですね。

Q3は基本編と書きましたが、全て根拠も言えて正解できた人は自信を持って良いと思います。

3-4 Q4の解説

Q4: 以下の文を訳して下さい

1. I couldn’t agree with you more.

これは入試の超頻出のテーマです。not ～ agree だから同意できないと考えませんでしたか？逆ですよ。

直訳するとあなたに「これ以上同意することはありえない」→「これ以上の同意はない」ということで

「私はあなたに大賛成です」という意味になります。

2. Eggs do not agree with me.

卵は私には合いません。

agree with ～は「(食べ物・気候などが)人(の好み)に合う」という使い方もします。

入試の応用問題としては定番です。まあ「同意する」も「合う」ということですしね。

3. Things haven’t been very agreeable lately.
最近状況は好ましくありません。

agreeableは

I’m quite agreeable to the plan. 

のようにagreeと同じ使い方もしますが、他に「快い」「感じが良い」という意味があります。英語の上級者でもこの意味を知らない人がいるので注意して下さい。

an agreeable voice は「同意できる声」ではなく「感じのよい声」です。

4. センターに出た「賛成」「反対」

さて、センター試験の過去問ですが、この問題は少しだけ凝っていますね。

I have a strong objection という出だしですが、have an objection to ～ ≒ object to ～です。

ですからtoは必要なので答は①か②ですが、このtoは、そう先程やった前置詞のto
ですね。よって後ろが動名詞になっている②が正解になります。

これも先程やった話がわかっていれば簡単です。HarryがNickにplanを見せたところ、Nickは「これは素晴らしい計画だ」と言っているので肯定の答を探せば良いわけですね。

肯定の答はそう、②の「大賛成だ」ですね。

①は完全な否定
③のThat depends. はこれも重要な表現で「時と場合による」
④のmake senseは「意味がある」。否定形だと「意味がない」となるので不正解です。
